I didn’t realize the importance of a TDS meter until my wife and I did the first Nutrient change on our homemade hydroponics setup. It was a couple of days after the solution was changed that our tomato plants started to develop brown tips on the leaves. It turned out that our solution was to strong, and caused nutrient burn on our plants, even though we followed instructions on the Nutrient package . That’s when we decided to get a TDS Meter to help us control the nutrient solution. Got a HM TDS3 on Ebay for $20.00 with shipping. This package came with a solution to calibrate the meter for hydroponics as it is only calibrated for drinking water when you get it from the factory. Instructions to recalibrate the meter were included and was a fairly simple task to accomplish.
Total Dissolved Solids readings help to indicate the density of solution which can help to determine when it’s time to add nutrients or if you added to much nutrient.
Temperature can affect TDS/EC meter readings. It is important that you read your hydroponics nutrient packaging carefully to make sure feeding indications correspond with your meter.
We made up a new nutrient solution with the help of our TDS meter and our plants recovered quickly.
